French heatwave alert extended to include 27 departments
The heat is expected to peak tomorrow, although temperatures of 37-8C have already been recorded today

National weather forecasting service Météo France has extended its orange heatwave alert to an additional 22 departments in southern, southeastern and northeastern France.

The departments now under the heat warning are: Ain, Ardèche, Corrèze, Côte-d’Or, Doubs, Drôme, Gard, Haute-Garonne, Isère, Jura, Loire, Haute-Loire, Lot, Lot-et-Garonne, Puy-de-Dôme, Pyrénées-Orientales, Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Rhône, Haute-Saône, Saône-et-Loire, Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne, Vaucluse and Territoire de Belfort.
A further 42 departments covering everywhere apart from northern and northwestern France are under yellow alerts for high temperatures.
At 15:00 today (August 2), it was 37-38C in Gard, around 35C in the Rhône valley and 33-34C around Toulouse.
The peak of the heat is expected to arrive tomorrow (August 3) and last into Thursday – with highs of 40C – although this heatwave is not predicted to last as long as previous hot spells this year.
